Wedding Photography: X-ray

Next class starts TBD

Teacher Jeremy + Ashley Parsons

Look up “story” in the thesaurus and you’ll get all kinds… adventure, romance, cliffhanger, drama, comedy, folktale. The crazy thing about weddings is they embody all of these, and more, in one single day. No other day in this couple’s history will be like this one. As photographers, you have the chance to tell a story that embodies the great adventures humans live for, all wrapped up in one.

The problem? It’s ONE day – with limited hours and thousands of factors you have no control over. From the location to light, weather, details, or complicated human interactions, you are at the mercy of your muses. This uncertainty has lead many a photographer to throw in the towel or just do the same things over and over again.

After ten years of doing this full time and being named among the “Top Ten Wedding Photographers in the World” Jeremy and Ashley Parsons can promise you this: this one day is filled with countless good stories, BUT if you as the photographer get caught up in things that don’t matter, you’ll miss it. They believe this story deserves more. Jeremy and Ash are here to show you how to tell a wedding story with the originality and heart it deserves. Whether you’re about to shoot your first wedding or your two-hundred-and-first, you’ll take the concept of wedding photography down to the skeleton, sharing how to tell this story in a way that’s potent, true, and non-formulaic. To honor the power of the wild story right in front of you and make you more confident and proud of your work than ever before.

WEEK ONE: “This is not about me.” Without a framework based on service, wedding photography degenerates into a ploy for a photographer’s self-glorification, hero shots, and Instagram likes. This week you’ll look inward, lay a solid foundation of why (it’s not what you’ve been told it is), and find new ways to gain inspiration.

WEEK TWO: “If I fail to plan, I plan to fail.” If you want to tell a good story, you have to know what to look for. This is the week where you’ll set a course for where you’re going, before the wedding day comes. This is the week of building in new rhythms and ways of thinking to help you be prepared for all this day will throw your way.

WEEK THREE: “It’s time for the treasure hunt.” This is the big one, the week where you talk about shooting a wedding! All the prep work you’ve done leads us to this day. Jeremy + Ash will walk you through every little aspect of the day, from start to finish, and share why they do what they do and how you can tell the story you are meant to tell.

WEEK FOUR: “These images will outlive you.” Finishing well is the greatest gift you give to yourself and the people who trust you to tell their story. This week you talk about everything post-wedding, and wrap up the class with new focus, inspiration, and tools for going forward with confidence and purpose.

The Schedule

All participation and interaction for this class will take place in a private online forum. (Registered students will receive instructions on how to access the forum a few days before class begins.)

On the first Monday of class, Jeremy + Ashley will share Lesson 1 in the forum and e-mail it to every student. They will be available during the week to answer questions and facilitate discussions in the forum as you read and work through your lessons.

Homework will be due on Sunday and personal critiques will take place the following Mondays. Each week will follow the same pattern.

The beauty of this class and every other class at DEFINE is that you can read, practice, and participate throughout the week whenever it is convenient for you- from any timezone, anywhere you have Internet access, at any time of day. Most students spend 3-5 hours per week “in class.”

If you have any questions, please feel free to email

Is this class for you?

This class is for any photographer interested in learning the ins and outs of how Jeremy and Ashley Parsons do wedding photography, and why… down to the bones.
From the photographer who has never shot a wedding but hopes to one day, to the full-time pro shooting fifty weddings a year, this class will impact you deeply and change how you see this work and approach it from here on out.

It’s especially beneficial for anyone who is: curious, burnt out, confused, afraid of wedding photography, stuck in a rut with their wedding photographs, discouraged about their clientele, caught in the comparison / Pinterest / wedding shotlist trap, or a successful, seasoned pro who senses a lack in vision or a desire to grow in new ways / shift paradigms.

Material(s) Needed

A NASA space suit and science goggles. (Just kidding. No special materials needed.)

  1. :

    Jeremy & Ash,

I am beyond grateful for the truths you have spoken in this space. I am encouraged and energized by the permission you’ve given us to be truth-tellers. The lightness and freedom I have felt over the last few weeks has affirmed in me that this is what I was made to do. It’s been like taking a four-week long walk in the woods, watching birds bounce through fresh snow while I drink in the soft breath of air through bare branches. (Okay – that might sound dreary and sad because it’s spring now… but that is the last time I felt that same lightness and freedom in that sort of tangible way.)

Being given permission to tell the truth. This was the best part for me because it reaffirmed what I had been leaning towards for quite some time (just didn’t have the guts to do because it feels so against the current of “normal”). This truth, coming from you guys with your years of experience, your heartfelt images, and your humility – it was an urgent, unyielding invite for me to change the way I view photography (and the people in front of me). And even better? You gave us practical lessons and language to start practicing this new way of interacting with our roles as photographers.
(Also… I LOVED the Google hangouts!!)

Thank you so, so much. I hope you receive ten-fold what you offered of yourselves in this class!

  2. :

I had no idea what to expect from this course, and I’ve been so deeply blessed by it. The content was so valuable, and I look forward to being able to go back through it in more detail as I make plans for moving forward. So I have no doubts that the lesson material will continue to have an impact for the months to come. The best part of the course in the midst of it was the Google hangout and the interaction we were able to have in these forums. Thank you for being present and willing to answer questions! I’m truly grateful for getting to know you even a little.

  3. :

I often find myself in the hustle/comparison game of wedding photography, and let me tell you that world of copy-catting and one-upping is so boring. I am feeling energized to empathize with my couples and fully step into their wedding days. It has been very refreshing hearing your real talk and how you have sought the care of your soul and family over fame and personal glory. Some of those things I’ve felt over the years but I’ve never head things spoken about as honestly as you have. I really appreciate that you aren’t afraid to talk about how fleeing this life is and what it’s all about because there is enough fluff out there.

  4. :

Thank you guys yet again. Any time spent with y’all I always walk away feeling rejuvenated, empowered, less alone, and with a clearer picture in my head of where I’m heading next. Thanks doesn’t feel like quite enough but please know from the bottom of my heart I’m always so grateful for the wisdom, insight, and practical information you guys share. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

  5. :

It’s funny, a few months ago I was looking through your blog and I thought man, I would just really love to know how the Parsons think on a wedding day. Shortly after I discovered you were teaching this class and who would believe, it was about exactly what I’d wondered? I couldn’t believe it, what a gift!

I feel free, honestly. Free to create images that shout truth and embrace real life; free to stop caring what the industry standard is and to do better for my clients; free to break the “rules” because where the heck did they come from anyways. I guess I feel like you’ve given me permission to be that photographer.

It has been so incredible learning from you! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for baring your thoughts and your practices. It would be easy to keep this magic to yourself, but you choose to share it. I think that says a lot about your sincerity and hearts. 🙂 Also thank you for the hang outs! Getting to discuss questions with you in real time was SO helpful! Thank you for all the time & effort & honesty you’ve put into this class.

  6. :

I’m at the beginning of my wedding photography journey, as everyone probably knows, so I wasn’t coming from a place of exhaustion or burnout in the industry, needing respite so much, as looking for discovery and a glimpse into a world that is drawing me in. This class felt like a peaceful welcome into that world, and I really believe y’all’s voice in writing and the audio / video files and on google hangouts just brought so much warmth and comfort to this new world for me. I love how authentically you have written the course (just living the truth of what you’re teaching and preaching!) and the way you have consciously been there for us and have been just the kindest teachers. I feel so cared for in all of it, and that is such an amazing gift, so thank youuuuu!!!

  7. :

This was the perfect course and reset I needed. It taught me a few core things that I knew in my soul, but didn’t know if people actually wanted it. They’ve poured their hearts in this course and there is no way anyone would regret it!

  8. :

This is the best workshop I’ve taken. It beat the massive amount of money I spent earlier this year for a week-long workshop in TN. If you’re an artist in wedding photography… I highly recommend this workshop! Changed my life.
