Teacher Zalmy Berkowitz

You have a family. You have a camera. You take many, many photos of said family with said camera. You might even be taking rip-roaring, knock-your-socks-off, industry-acclaimed photos.

But you feel there is something missing. You aren’t seeing your life in the images, or maybe you take 400 photos of each happening and have to look at 50 of them to get a feel for the day (and you may be freaking out about how you’re going to manage all those photos in 50 years).

Or maybe you want to take it up a notch (or two).

This is the class for you.

Learn how to crystalize your vision for what you want to document, and to truly embrace your life as it is.

Zalmy will help you take fewer images that tell more. You’ll learn to take images of your family that you can look at and feel the moment – the wind, the sound, the emotion, the smell.

This is a course about “the big picture,” both in the sense of seeing beyond the immediate and capturing images that mean more, and of taking images that tell large stories – images that you can get lost in.

WEEK ONE: Taking Stock: Putting into words who you are, what it is you want to capture

WEEK TWO: Immersive Photos: In which we explore the emotional impact of focal length, and how to rock the wide angle

WEEK THREE: Telling a Good Story: What to photograph, how to compose, and when to press the shutter

WEEK FOUR: Thinking Outside of the (2×3) Box: How to stop finding your voice and start exploring

The Schedule

All participation and interaction for this class will take place in a private online forum. (Registered students will receive instructions on how to access the forum a few days before class begins.)

On the first Monday of class, Zalmy will share Lesson 1 in the forum and e-mail it to every student. He will also be available during the week to answer questions and facilitate discussions in the forum as you read and work through your lessons.

Homework will be due on Sunday and critiques/reviews will take place the following Monday. Each week will follow the same pattern.

The beauty of this class and every other class at DEFINE is that you can read, practice, and participate throughout the week whenever it is convenient for you- from any timezone, anywhere you have Internet access, at any time of day. Most students spend 3-5 hours per week “in class.”

If you have any questions please feel free to email

Is this class for you?

This class is for students wishing to make lasting and immersive photographic stories of their families. You should already have a working knowledge of cameras, ISO, aperture, focal length, shutter speed, etc.

Material(s) Needed

A camera (preferably a DSLR or an advanced point and shoot) and a computer. A lens wider than 35mm (equivalent) is strongly recommended. (If you do not own one, consider renting one, or even buying a moment-wide lens for your iPhone to get the most out of this class!)
