You need to be honest with yourself in order to create something that moves you, and unless you yourself are being shaken out, can you expect anyone else to be?

Once you have the basics down, it is important to turn within. This class will help you begin to search for inspiration and create a way to stay consistently creative, which in turn will help you grow as an artist.

Being creative is at the forefront of this class-  finding your inner artist and letting it out. Carolyn went to graduate school for photography and spent years using big cameras and heavy equipment to fulfill her need for a creative outlet.

“But then something happened,” she says. “I realized that the iPhone I always had in my bag or pocket had this little camera and it was all I needed to get a great creative workout. The more I shot with it, the more I saw the parallels to the work I was doing with my big camera.”

You will finish this class with an understanding of visual threads and how to create a body of work with your phone that you are proud of. You’ll walk away feeling that your creativity is bright and active.

WEEK ONE: Learn the importance of creative exercise and how the phone you have in your pocket is all you need to get a workout.

WEEK TWO: Gain the tools to battle your roadblocks, work on self-love, and let loose.

WEEK THREE: Carolyn will talk about creating threads, learning from criticism, and curating a mini-collection all with images you take with your phone.

The Schedule

All participation and interaction for this class will take place in a private online forum. (Registered students will receive instructions on how to access the forum a few days before class begins.)

On the first Monday of class, Carolyn will share Lesson 1 in the forum and e-mail it to every student. She will be available during the week to answer questions and facilitate discussions in the forum as you read and work through your lessons.

Homework will be due on Sunday and critiques/reviews will take place the following Monday. Each week will follow the same pattern.

The beauty of this class and every other class at DEFINE is that you can read, practice, and participate throughout the week whenever it is convenient for you- from any timezone, anywhere you have Internet access, at any time of day. Most students spend 3-5 hours per week “in class.”

If you have any questions please feel free to email

  1. :

My experience with the Self + Art class was phenomenal!! Carolyn’s lessons were incredibly thoughtful and had a more tremendous impact on my self (and my first formal photography anything) than I could have imagined. The assignments were so much fun and I found myself wishing that the course never ended and that it was the only responsibility that I had.

  2. :

Carolyn’s class was an amazing journey of self discovery through photography. She helped me see myself a little more clearly as an artist and taught me to look for threads in my photography to enable me to curate a collection of photos that complimented themselves. I wish it had been 6 weeks instead of 3!

  3. :

The class was FANTASTIC. Outstanding- it surpassed every expectation I had from an online course. She has a true gift, not only with her work as an artist but also with her words as a teacher and mentor. She was able to come across in every lesson, with every direction, so rich in details, you could really tell first that she knew what she was talking about, second her imagery was so powerful and illustrative of every single point she wanted to make across, and third and perhaps most important of all, that she loved was she’s doing. You have to love it to be so passionate and invested in every detail.

She’s an amazing teacher and was able to connect with us at so many levels and make the class interactive and super active. We were able to connect with our work, with ourselves, with her and with our classmates. It really has been one of the best experiences I’ve had, and because of it I am looking forward to taking more classes with you and I would totally recommend her class to EVERYONE!

  4. :

I just completed the Self + Art class with Carolyn Mara Borlenghi and I just have to tell you it was FANTASTIC! I knew my phone camera was capable of doing so much more than what I was using it for. Every once in awhile I would get a picture that gave me a feeling of, “Wow… I love it!”, but then that photo would be followed by many {many} more “eh… it’s okay” ones. Getting a photo I loved seemed to be hit or miss. Self + Art helped me to pinpoint exactly what it is about the “wow… I love it” photos that I loved, and then guided me toward applying those common threads to all the photos I take with my phone. I have gained confidence in what I share with friends personally or via Instagram and Facebook, and feel that what I do share is a much more accurate reflection of who I am as an artist. Thank you for offering this class… it was a wonderful experience.

  5. :

Taking pretty pictures is one thing, but recognizing myself as an artist is a completely different story. Although I felt I knew the ins and outs of taking pictures with my phone, I decided I wanted, or rather needed, to go deeper. To learn more about myself and to question my beliefs and what I think art really is. I was able to do this and so much more during my three weeks with Carolyn’s online Self + Art class. From simple daily challenges to overcoming feelings of fear and defeat, this soul-provoking class left me feeling brave, strong, and full of hope and excitement.

  6. :

This class forced me to be vulnerable and push my creativity in a way I didn’t know I deeply needed. Acknowledging fear and then overcoming it is something I’ve avoided for a long time. It has been easier to hide behind my camera and photograph the moments in others lives. The moments right in front of me felt good enough. Chasing images became part of my past and I felt lost in my identity as a photographer. Letting go this year and taking a class like this allowed me to think beyond the obvious moments. Carolyn encouraged us to slow down and create with a purpose. Simple prompts like “light” in this class allowed me to begin to bloom.

As I created and photographed the assignments, I felt inspired and there was a thrill that radiated through me with an intense passion. The fear began to fade and I finally saw something in my images that was deep, raw and personal. I gained a confidence I hadn’t felt in a long time. Being the subject behind most of my creations forced me to be brave. I love photographing the fleeting moments with children and families and I always will but adding the depth of seeing things that aren’t obvious and right in front of me results in that raw beauty that evokes indescribable emotion. I ended this class ready to continue my growth and excited to create. I am an artist. I needed this. Take this class. Trust me.

This class has had such a positive impact on me. The lessons are still sinking in and I know I will be revisiting them for a long time to come. My homework honestly represents the first photographs I took as art. I was scared and excited and I couldn’t have asked for a more supportive environment to learn in. It turned a dream to get started taking pictures into incredible inspiration and a new hobby I love. It’s amazing looking back on how much I have learned! Carolyn is a wonderful teacher… she has a true a gift! I couldn’t be happier I made the decision to take this class!!!
