Have you ever been stranded in a parking lot with a car that just won’t start?  You are trying everything, but the battery is just drained.  Maybe you left the lights on too long or maybe you forgot to close the side door, but either way, no matter what you do, no matter how many times you curse or pray or try, it just won’t start.

There are times when you just feel stranded and exhausted as an artist and the truth is, there is a way out.

Art – especially photography – is such an incredible way to celebrate life, but sometimes you get drained and need a jump start for your creative batteries.

This class was created to get you out of your creative slump by challenging you to shoot often and start creating again. By committing to a period of focused work, you’ll get your juices flowing again – the beginning is never easy, but once you dive in things get easier. Whether this is the first time you want to push yourself or you have just lost your zest, this class is designed to help facilitate the dive and guide you in a journey of creative discovery.

This is a three-week class. Rather than weekly lessons, students will receive a new creative prompt every three days. Each one-page lesson and assignment will be designed to allow the student to fully participate within the allotted time. There will be seven of these lessons sent out (Monday, Thursday, Sunday, Wednesday, Saturday, Tuesday, Friday), each with a prompt and assignment.

The first and last lesson will be a bit longer, but the others will give detailed ideas based on one theme and then ask students to go out and shoot. Instead of a vague one-word prompt, these ideas are designed to give more thought and provocation. Carolyn will offer personal feedback and critique on each assignment submitted.

The Schedule

All participation and interaction for this class will take place in a private online forum. (Registered students will receive instructions on how to access the forum a few days before class begins.)

On the first Monday of class, Carolyn will share the first lesson and creative prompt in the forum and e-mail it to every student. While most of our DEFINE courses follow a weekly-lesson format, this class is unique – new assignments will be sent out every three days, for a total of seven creative prompts. Carolyn will be available during the week to answer questions and facilitate discussions in the forum as you read and work through your prompts.

The beauty of this class and every other class at DEFINE is that you can read, practice, and participate throughout the week whenever it is convenient for you – from any timezone, anywhere you have Internet access, at any time of day. Most students spend 3-5 hours per week “in class.”

If you have any questions please feel free to email

  1. :

I was really in a creative funk and this class really helped to get those juices flowing again. The fast pace and simplicity of the lessons really helped to get me out of my head and just shooting!! I think sometimes we get too stuck on what something might look like that we forget to just shoot and this class reminded me that what is important is to shoot shoot shoot! Carolyn is a fantastic mentor and nurturer of the creative soul. Loved this class!!

  2. :

I feel like I am taking a step out of my creative rut. I shoot pictures at the same events every year, in the same environments, and have often been frustrated by the sameness of what I produce. This class has challenged me to look at those environments in new ways. What really worked for me was the fast pace. As much as it was a bit stressful to constantly be creating, I think that is what gives this class its uniqueness. I appreciated your suggested process of a prompt, thoughtful time spent journaling about it, and then being given a direction to take it. I also loved the aspect of seeing the work produced by other students, and the opportunity to comment. Of course, I appreciated the comments I received. Thanks so much Carolyn for leading the class! I really appreciated your feedback and constant communication.
