That personal project that’s been floating around in the back of your mind – do you know how to start? Do you have the creative energy to pursue it? Before you can move into creating art that fills you up, you have to find your voice.

This class will guide you in making art that aligns with who you are as a person. Through self exploration you will begin to fine-tune your personal voice, figuring out who you are and what you have to say, and lay the foundations for fulfilling personal projects that bring you life and energy.

You will work through rich creative exercises involving your body, mind, soul, and spirit to challenge where you look for inspiration and what influences you. These exercises are designed to focus your creativity in order to brainstorm a vision for personal projects that will help you grow as an artist and create meaningful and authentic art. Weekly assignments will be complemented by forum discussions and interviews with other internationally respected photographers to fuel your mind and heart.

With a solid foundation under your feet, you’ll leave class re-energized and confident in who you are and what you are creating.

WEEK ONE: Who are you? Examining your life’s story to find themes to explore in your work

WEEK TWO: What are you looking at? Looking to the masters, working on your life to work on your art (art as a holistic journey)

WEEK THREE: How do you see? Identifying themes in your work and beginning research for a personal project

WEEK FOUR: What will you make? The foundations of your personal project(s) and feedback from the community

The Schedule

All participation and interaction for this class will take place in a private online forum. (Registered students will receive instructions on how to access the forum a few days before class begins.)

On the first Monday of class, Jess will share Lesson 1 in the forum. She will be available during the week to answer questions and facilitate discussions in the forum as you read and work through your lessons.

Homework will be due on Sunday and personal critiques will take place the following Mondays. Each week will follow the same pattern.

The beauty of this class and every other class at DEFINE is that you can read, practice, and participate throughout the week whenever it is convenient for you- from any timezone, anywhere you have Internet access, at any time of day. Most students spend 3-5 hours per week “in class.”

Is this class for you?

Do you feel like there is a gap between the art you're making and your authentic self and what really matters to you? Do you feel like you have conformed to someone else's version of success or creative expression? Have you felt like you're in a creative rut with no desire to pick up your camera? Are you lacking ideas or inspiration for your work? Do you need a creative jumpstart and want to have the gentle support of other like-minded artists? Do you have the ideas for a personal project percolating but aren't sure how or where to start? This class is for you!

Material(s) Needed

A camera, a journal, a willingness to try new things and explore new ways of expressing creativity. A library card or Amazon Prime account wouldn't hurt, either.
