Teacher Michelle Gardella

So often as creatives, we feel split down the middle: Do I devote my life to my art or do I devote my life to my family? While many classes and workshops talk a great deal about balancing this dilemma and finding ways to manage our time effectively, Michelle Gardella couldn’t find one that celebrated the artists who, at the end of the day, feel a calling to a more holistic way of living and creating.

After living for years in a 25-foot camper with her husband and two children (5, 12) she had to find a way of life that authentically integrated her deeply maternal heart with her crazy creative soul.

It turns out, it is entirely possible to include your family in your creative process. In fact, when you lean into a more inclusive way of photographing and making art, the work you create resonates with more meaning than you ever thought possible.

Over four weeks, you will explore what it means to not only be a creative mother, but to foster a creative home and family, too. At the end of the class you will be left with beautiful art to hang on your walls, serving as reminders of your magical family collaboration.

This class will have videos each week that the whole family can watch together!

WEEK ONE: The Inclusive Family Model

WEEK TWO: Photography That Has Meaning

WEEK THREE: Perspective

WEEK FOUR:  Your Story

The Schedule

All participation and interaction for the class Family Tapestry with Michelle Gardella will take place in a private online forum. (Registered students will receive instructions on how to access the forum a few days before class begins.)

On the first Monday of class, Michelle will share Lesson 1 as a PDF in the forum and e-mail it to every student. She will also upload an optional video version of the lesson covering the written material so you can choose the way you learn best. She will be available during the week to answer questions and facilitate discussions in the forum as you read and work through your lessons.

Homework will be due on Sunday and personal critiques will take place the following Mondays. Each week will follow the same pattern.

The beauty of this class and every other class at DEFINE is that you can read, practice, and participate throughout the week whenever it is convenient for you- from any timezone, anywhere you have Internet access, at any time of day. Most students spend 3-5 hours per week “in class.”

If you have any questions, please feel free to email
