Our March Class Lineup – A Quick Guide

Overwhelmed by the choices? Our class guide will help you find the perfect course for you! Our interactive online photography classes all take place in our private forum with a real-live teacher and a group of fellow students walking through four weeks of learning with you. If you’re new to DEFINE, you can learn more about how it works here.

All listed classes begin March 6th.

Our brand new writing course Your Spirit in Words + Imagery with photographer and songwriter Amy Messenger was created just for photographers. Learn to connect deeply to your imagery and speak from a place inside your spirit that invites your readers and clients to a more meaningful engagement with your work – your website, blog, or social media posts. (And for a limited time, all students save $25!)

Perfect if you’re… looking to sharpen your writing skills in your professional or personal life or just want to expand your creativity.

Explore how to shoot specifically for black and white photographs, experiment with different processing techniques, and celebrate what happens when you create right smack dab in the middle of the intersection of historical tradition and modern visualization. Foundations of Black + White with Michelle Gardella will deepen your understanding of black and white photography and open your eyes to new ways of seeing the world.

Perfect if you’re… interested in stretching your creative muscles and gaining new perspectives, whether you typically shoot B&W or not. You should be comfortable using your camera and be familiar with Lightroom and Photoshop.

Lightroom is incredible – and overwhelming. Living in Lightroom will start with the most basic features – uploading your images – and work through organizing, editing, and making books and galleries. With daily emails from Kellie Hatcher and video tutorials along with your written lessons, you’ll maximize your efficiency and speed up your workflow with functions you didn’t even know existed!

Perfect if you’re… brand new to Lightroom, or a self-taught user that’s missing out on the full capabilities of the program or feeling intimidated to tackle a new workflow.

Don’t get carried away by the trends and voices of everyone else on social media. Kristin Rogers will teach you from her personal experience managing her incredibly popular Instagram account to identify your own style and mindset and use Instagram to reach your audience while staying true to yourself in your content, priorities, and values. Instagram With Heart is not about popularity, but about cultivating organic growth by staying aligned to your vision.

Perfect if you’re… trying to foster genuine connections on Instagram and develop a healthy online presence.

Learn everything you need to know to about lifestyle stock photography and how to capture meaningful, marketable lifestyle images of everyday moments without compromising your style, overwhelming your family, or consuming your time. Shooting For Stock with Offset photographer Suzanne Gipson will equip you with the tools you need to create your portfolio and navigate the world of lifestyle stock photography.

Perfect if you’re… a lifestyle photographer interested in refining your client or personal work to be marketable as stock imagery.

Shooting in Manual is the perfect starting place for photography lovers that want to step away from “auto” mode. Learn with Courtney Zimmerman the different elements your camera uses to record pictures and how you can harness those elements to make the images you have in mind, rather than the images your camera’s computer has in mind.

Perfect if you’re… feeling limited by auto mode and ready to take control of your image making, but not sure how to tackle all the manual settings.

Take the mystery out of metering and stop winging it with your exposure. Make your work stronger by studying how to view and understand light in a room, refining your eye for composition, and learning practical techniques to create strong images. Light + Life with Kellie Hatcher covers all the aspects of light and how to capture it most beautifully without interrupting the moments unfolding around the camera.

Perfect if you’re… a hobbyist or aspiring professional who’s comfortable shooting manually but wants to refine your composition and exposures.

Go beyond merely taking a pretty picture. Visual Storytelling with Molly Flanagan will equip you with the tools to step away from typical photographer-driven pictures and learn to let life speak for itself. Whether taking pictures around your home, documenting a vacation or event, photographing families or covering weddings, learn to capture a complete story through your own personal style using all of your senses.

Perfect if you’re… a hobbyist or lifestyle photographer who’s comfortable with your technical skills, but looking for something to dig into your storytelling and help you identify a theme for your work, personally or professionally.

Whether you’re about to shoot your first wedding or your two-hundred-and-first, Wedding Photography: X-ray with Jeremy and Ashley Parsons will help you you take the concept of wedding photography down to the skeleton, sharing how to tell this story in a way that’s potent, true, and non-formulaic.

Our March 2017 session of Wedding Photography: X-ray is sold out – watch for future dates to be announced!
