The Art of Styling

$300.00

Next class starts July 4
Registration opens June 6
Teacher Anna Naphtali

A stylist is someone who works closely with a photographer or creative director to create thoughtful, provoking images. Styling is often misunderstood as a superficial role of decorating or posing props and people; that’s not what this class is about.

The Art of Styling is about becoming a master composer and sleuth of light, texture, symphony, color, space- all the elements that comprise a good image.

This class will expand your repertoire of shooting by exploring how to style tabletop, food, and details and then applying the same techniques to shooting weddings, people, and editorial stories for print.

Instructor Anna Naphtali will discuss why creating is important and how to draw inspiration from compelling work that you find. Students will experiment in shooting with different compositional influences and get down to the details, learning the tricks, tips, and tools of styling and how to apply them to every shoot.

This course also covers shooting and styling for print and presenting your work virtually through blogging, social media, and the world-wide web.

Students will finish this class with a greater sense of who they are as artists, the knowledge and practice of how to achieve the images they want to create, and the skills to be a personal stylist and photographer in one.

If you are looking to push your work creatively and refresh your senses as a photographer and artist, this class is for you.

Registration opens June 6th at 12 PM EST

Syllabus

WEEK ONE: Intro to Aesthetics & The Role of a Stylist. Take a deeper look behind what is seen and discuss why aesthetics are important. You’ll learn the roles of a stylist and how they apply to photographers, and you’ll begin your journey into learning how to “see.”

WEEK TWO: Elements of Composition. This week you’ll learn the language of styling by discussing elements like composition, color, and texture. Material will focus on developing your sense of personal artistry and aesthetic as both photographer and stylist.

WEEK THREE: Styling 101. Apply your newly sharpened skills to focus on the practical steps of styling, particularly for food, tabletop, details and products. After discussing details such as lighting, props, lenses, and environment, you will experiment with styling and shooting your own personal projects.

WEEK FOUR: Editorial, Narrative & Curating. This week applies styling principles to shooting weddings, portraits and editorial stories for print. You’ll also learn how to virtually present your work through blogging, social media, and branding. Anna will offer personal guidance and critique on your work, aesthetic, web presence, blogging, and more.

The Schedule

All participation and interaction for this class will take place in a private online forum. (Registered students will receive instructions on how to access the forum a few days before class begins.)

On the first Monday of class, Anna will share Lesson 1 in the forum and e-mail it to every student. She will also be available during the week to answer questions and facilitate discussions in the forum as you read and work through your lessons.

Homework will be due on Sunday and critiques/reviews will take place the following Monday. Each week will follow the same pattern.

The beauty of this class and every other class at DEFINE is that you can read, practice, and participate throughout the week whenever it is convenient for you- from any timezone, anywhere you have Internet access, at any time of day. Most students spend 3-5 hours per week “in class.”

If you have any questions please feel free to email [email protected].

Is this class for you?

This class is for the photographer who doesn’t want to just document time, but craves to create something beautiful. This is for students who need help seeing again and want to be refreshed by diving into discovering themselves as artists through the applied skills of styling and composition. All levels of photography welcome, however in order to get the most out of the assignments you will want to be able to use your camera comfortably.

Reviews

  1. :

Anna’s Art of Styling was engaging and incredibly beneficial to my photography. There was no slow build waiting to get the best information in week 4, this class had me reading, rereading, and practicing the content from day 1. All of my questions were answered, from actual styling, to gear, to business. Anna’s feedback was invaluable, so much so I went through all my classmate’s homework to get additional tips! I would highly recommend this class to beginners and experienced photographers alike.
