Summer Camp

Missed out on Summer Camp? We loved it so much, we turned it into a recurring class. Check out Boot Camp for a creative kickstart any time of year!

Next class starts July 2018
Registration opens June 2018
Teacher Molly Flanagan + Kellie Hatcher
Sponsored by Artifact Uprising

School’s out for SUMMER! Longer days and more light mean more time for the things you love! As you spend your days creating memories with friends and family, don’t let your photography fall by the wayside. Kellie Hatcher and Molly Flanagan will engage and motivate you each morning for four weeks through daily challenges and weekly live Q&As. Summer Camp will keep your photography on point without taking up your precious vacation time.

Each week will revolve around specific technical categories including exploring light, utilizing creative composition, waiting for gesture, and evoking emotion. These assignments will give you a framework that will challenge you to think outside the box and motivate you to document your summer with your family and friends. Focused assignments each day mean you don’t have to worry about getting behind. A fresh message each morning will charge your creative juices and keep things fun!

To top if off, you’ll knock one more item off your summer to-do list: printing your work.

At the end of Summer Camp, you will receive a beautiful Artifact Uprising book of your own images telling the story of your long summer days!

WEEK ONE: Seeing the Light – From windows to garages; open shade, backlight, or hard light; sunrises, mid-day, and sunsets; ambient light or mixed light, daily lighting challenges will get you out of a rut and using light you’ve never noticed before.

WEEK TWO: Composition in Chaos – By focusing on a different element of composition each day, you’ll see the frames of your life with a new perspective. Expect to play with the rule of thirds, negative space, leading lines, framing, symmetry, texture, color combinations, and more.

WEEK THREE: Expression + Gesture – Commit those temper tantrums, shrieks of laughter, bear hugs, and quiet snuggles to memory. Your days and family are filled with a range of emotions – this week you get to photograph them and the interactions between the people you love.

WEEK FOUR: Portrait of a Family – Spend time this week photographing different pieces of your family and friends. You’ll have daily assignments to create images like couples portraits, candid shots, a portrait of someone who is unaware you are photographing them, a group shot, and more.

The Schedule

All participation and interaction for this class will take place in a private online forum. (Registered students will receive instructions on how to access the forum a few days before class begins.)

Kellie + Molly will share daily assignments in the forum and host a weekly Q+A. They will be available during the week to answer questions and facilitate discussions in the forum as you read and work through your lessons.

Homework will be due on Sunday and personal critiques will take place the following Mondays. Each week will follow the same pattern.

The beauty of this class and every other class at DEFINE is that you can read, practice, and participate throughout the week whenever it is convenient for you- from any timezone, anywhere you have Internet access, at any time of day. Most students spend 3-5 hours per week “in class.”

If you have any questions, please feel free to email

  1. :

I LOVED this class!! It was so much fun, and kept me taking photos all month long. My favorite part was getting a new assignment every day, and stretching my limits. It’s fun getting to see what all the students are doing during their summer, and getting to interact. I loved getting feedback to improve myself. Then at the end of it all, we get to keep our photos in print!!

I would definitely take this class again, and recommend it to anyone looking to have fun with their photography!!

  2. :

Four weeks of Summer Camp with Molly and Kellie changed my perspective as a new photographer. Molly and Kellie helped me capture life around me with a different eye. It was so exciting to take on the daily assignments and to share pictures with other students. From beginners to more advanced, I would recommend this class to anyone who wants to put a little spice into their photography and to bring their pictures to life.

  3. :

This workshop was perfect for Summer when you need something a little flexible and laid back, but still want to learn. The daily prompts were fun and provided new things daily in a very digestible format. Kellie and Molly set the tone for a very kind and fun environment with a lot of camaraderie among participants. Their prompt feedback was just the right amount of encouragement and critique. I’ve never been a part of a class in which I was so comfortable trying new things, experimenting and sharing.
