iPhoneography has become a part of our everyday lives. Many photographers will agree that despite having “proper” cameras, the iPhone is often their default, go-to camera of choice.

In this class, you’ll explore iPhoneography techniques to help you capture and share your honest story as a mother. This includes documenting all the sentimental, beautiful, real, and raw moments of motherhood, whether images of your loved ones, yourself, or the busyness of life.

As a busy, modern-day mother, explore how iPhoneography can help you capture beautiful images on the go- all day, every day. This class won’t teach you how to take the perfect picture, but it will teach you how to share your own “mother’s story” with all your heart and soul.

Syllabus

WEEK ONE: The basics of iPhoneography, and the concept of documentary style photography and how it complements the role of mothers.

WEEK TWO: The focus will shift to you as an individual, which can often be forgotten in your mothering role. Throughout this week you’ll work on capturing images that represent you as an individual on many different levels. Discussions will focus on the importance of capturing these types of images and the need for them to be shared and passed on to loved ones.

WEEK THREE: You’ll apply a documentary photography approach into your everyday life, including time at home and time out and about. Photo assignments will force you to think on your feet as you practice capturing beautiful memories and everyday moments.

The Schedule

All participation and interaction for this class will take place in a private online forum. (Registered students will receive instructions on how to access the forum a few days before class begins.)

On the first Monday of class, Soud will share Lesson 1 in the forum and e-mail it to every student. She will be available during the week to answer questions and facilitate discussions in the forum as you read and work through your lessons.

Homework will be due on Sunday and critiques/reviews will take place the following Monday. Each week will follow the same pattern.

The beauty of this class and every other class at DEFINE is that you can read, practice, and participate throughout the week whenever it is convenient for you- from any timezone, anywhere you have Internet access, at any time of day. Most students spend 3-5 hours per week “in class.

If you have any questions please feel free to email info@thedefineschool.com.

The beauty of this class it that it broadens your horizons and makes you think outside of the box. It encourages you to document moments you may not have thought about photographing before. The course gives you the tools needed to enhance your editing skills (everything from apps to angles)… your entire thought process when taking photos will blossom. You will leave feeling more confident in your photography and with a refreshed and awakened eye.

Overall I found the course very helpful in improving my photo documentary skills. I learnt a handful of simple but very effective techniques that have now totally changed the way I take images and these techniques now play a part in my regular photography. The course delivery was great and the content easy to understand but equally challenging in helping me develop new skills and push boundaries. I loved getting feedback in a safe environment and felt very supported by Soud and the other course participants. Soud was also very happy to answer any questions and provide one-on-one help during the course duration.
